Sunrise of Westbourne Wins Regional Award

Sunrise of Westbourne wins regional award There is much emphasis placed on dementia in the media at the moment, with the government telling us to go to their website for information, and celebrities such as Terry Pratchett making these conditions more human to us all.

Although there is much talk of Alzheimer’s and other dementias there is still quite a limited provision of specialist care for seniors in this arena, which is quite surprising since there are more than 700,000 people in the UK who have some form of dementia according to the Alzheimer’s Society.

Sunrise Senior Living, almost since its inception more than 25 years ago, has made special provisions for dementia care within its residences. The ‘Reminiscence Neighbourhood’ at Sunrise is a separate part of the building within which the emphasis is placed on helping those that have memory loss to remember and therefore to feel more comfortable and happy.

The building design, particular therapeutic features and the team of specialist carers all work together to create pleasant days for residents.

Care of this kind requires patience, understanding and a real desire to help seniors. Often carers that have these qualities remain ‘unsung heroes’.

Not so, for once at Sunrise of Westbourne.

Apart from receiving a prestigious three-star “Excellent” rating from the Care Quality commission the manager of the ‘Reminiscence Neighbourhood’ at Sunrise of Westbourne, Lynn Petty and her team have been selected as Winner of the Dementia Carer Award for the South West region, by the Great British Care Awards. It followed a nomination made by a family member of a resident.

As a result of this award, the team has also been invited to attend the National Finals presented by Keith Chegwin and Fiona Phillips, where the ceremony to present this prestigious award will take place.

Lisa Soper Head of Care for Sunrise Senior Living commented "Absolutely brilliant news and well deserved. It is fantastic to see such recognition of all that the dementia care team does each and every day. We know that when we get the right people in the right jobs with such passion, heart and commitment, we really do deliver the best care for our residents."
